a day in the life of a uni student

Settling into university isn’t just about remembering your timetable or your tutor’s name, it’s about discovering everything that the experience has to offer. This includes the grounds – your everyday surroundings.

I’ve been easing off the looming stress of piling assignments by roaming the grounds, taking in the sights and inhaling the fresh air. It’s a beautiful university, really. Not only is it right in the city but it’s also skirted by an impressively constructed manmade beach, which can really seem quite magical on a day of clear-blue skies with a shore lined by ice-cream clad strollers. Streets of quirky cafes and speciality stores coil and curl around the study blocks, combining the concepts of learning, knowledge and culture all in an exciting dynamic.

I wanted to capture the tiny moments of beauty that occur between my classes that make my days at uni less ordinary and more substantial. These are only iPhone quality snaps but I feel they capture special moments that occur during my days.

i heart into the gloss

As someone who would pause a movie during a bathroom scene in order to discover what brand of products the character was using (with people like me in this world, product placement proves to be a very valuable marketing tool), you can imagine my excitement when I came across the website Into The Gloss. I’m going to be completely honest here – I read the whole website during the one sitting, which was the same sitting that I came across the website.

Into the Gloss is a blog-like website that emulates the feeling of reading the beauty section of a Vogue magazine. You know that feeling you get when you know you’re indulging in a dangerously luxurious guilty pleasure? Yeah, that feeling. To sum the website up, reading it is as though you’ve got a backstage pass, and are learning the finest tips straight from the glossed up lips of the elite fashion industry.

Props to Emily Weiss for creating such a blessing-of-a-source for beauty lovers all over the world. She’s really made a mark, with this website having being mentioned by almost every fashion blogger in-the-know. And, since discovering this website, I have acquired almost every product that was mentioned more than twice by the beautiful beings featured on it. It’s safe to say it’s here to stay. A cult website.

If you were a follower of my previous blog, you’d be familiar with my love-affair with all things beauty, and so it’s only fitting that I Into-The-Gloss-ified my own beauty wardrobe.

Here’s a sneak peek of the favourites from my always-expanding beauty stash:

It’s already week 3 of my first year of University, and it’s only moving faster. This is my first year studying the degree of Bachelor of Design, majoring in Visual Communication Design. So far it’s steadily building up to prove itself as a pretty hands-on and professional course. Everything I’ve learned is either really relevant for today or seems relevant for when I will graduate as a Graphic Designer.

I’m still a newbie on Illustrator (and pretty much all of the design-magician’s-bag-of-tricks, commonly known as the Adobe Suite). But what’s helping me is one of my tutor’s teaching strategy of “WAX ON, WAX OFF!”. She refers to herself as Mrs Miyagi, and likes to ensure that we learn our program’s short cut keys through repetitive practice – over and over and over. It seems really redundant and pointless, yet I can definitely see a huge improvement in my speed.

What this post is really about, however, is that I’ve moved on to a new chapter of my life (cue cliche music here). I’m a long-time blogger, but I feel I have outgrown my previous blog and so this new blog will be the beginning of my journey as a fashion-enthusiast graphic designer.

Keep reading to follow the series of steps and creative adventures ( and possible tribulations but hopefully limited!) one must endure to learn what it takes to join the design field.

And remember…

WAX ON, WAX OFF.
